At Phoenix Consulting, our people are at the heart of everything we do. Our Day in the Life series offers a closer look at the individuals who support our clients every day — sharing their experiences, career journeys, and what it’s really like to work in commercial management and quantity surveying.

Through these stories, we highlight the variety, challenges, and opportunities that come with working across infrastructure and construction projects. From early starts on site to end-of-month reporting, no two days are ever the same — and that’s what makes the role so rewarding.

A Day in the Life of Pat Devine, Senior Quantity Surveyor, Phoenix North & Midlands

How did you begin your career?
“Back in 1988, as a Junior QS at Wimpey Construction. I knew nothing about the industry — my first year was mostly measuring drainage and making tea!”

What’s a standout moment in your career?
“At 50, I finally earned my BSc in Quantity Surveying. It proved to me it’s never too late to learn and grow.”

What does your typical day look like?
“No two days are the same, but they always start with coffee. At the end of the month, it’s valuations and applications for payment. Other days involve reviewing budgets, estimates, and contracts, as well as meetings with clients, engineers, and contractors.”

What makes Phoenix different?
“You’re treated as an individual, not a number. There’s open communication and a genuine focus on helping people thrive.”

What advice would you give to others?
“Be adaptable, flexible, and always willing to learn. This industry never stands still.”

A Day in the Life of Joseph Harris, Managing Quantity Surveyor, Phoenix Consulting

How did you begin your career?
I started out as a trainee QS, learning on the job while completing my degree at UCLAN. During that time, I worked across a variety of commercial roles on projects throughout England. It involved a lot of hands-on learning, a few mistakes along the way, and working with good people who helped shape how I work today.

What’s a standout moment in your career?
There isn’t one defining moment, but taking on more responsibility and realising people trust your judgement is a big one. Helping younger surveyors find their feet has also been particularly rewarding.

What does your typical day look like?
Every day’s different. It could be site meetings, CVR’s, forecasting, or reviewing subcontractor applications and valuations. No two days are ever the same, which keeps it interesting.

What’s your greatest achievement?
My greatest achievements are my two children Isaac and Clara, who keep me very busy outside of work! Professionally though, achieving a first-class honours degree alongside a full-time job was a major accomplishment, and the growth since has been something I take real pride in.

What skills do you need to be effective in your role?
Good communication, common sense, and the ability to stay level-headed when things don’t go to plan. Being approachable and able to work well with others is just as important as the technical side, in my opinion.

What makes Phoenix different?
It’s a supportive environment where people back each other and take pride in their work. There’s a strong team ethos that genuinely makes you feel part of a family.

What advice would you give to others?
Get stuck in, don’t be afraid to ask questions, and learn from everyone around you. Most importantly, however cliché it sounds, be yourself. There’s no single right way to do things, and everyone can carve out their own path in the industry.

Through this series, we aim to showcase not just the work we do, but the people who make it happen — sharing real insight into the careers, experiences, and perspectives that define Phoenix Consulting.
